December 20, 2018- All Aboard the Polar Express!


Agenda:

  • Fresh Air Friday tomorrow-there is school!

What did we do today?
  • At the end of the day, the whole school went into the library to hear Mrs. Kidd read The Polar Express while sipping on hot chocolate.
  • In gym we played tag.  We played Holiday Tag with Scrooge and the Grinch as "its" and Santa Tag, where Santa and Mrs. Claus were it.
  • In language arts, and we finished watching the Polar Express and we completed our Venn Diagrams on the movie and the book.
  • In computer lab, we did Mathletics and you could do multiverse if you finished your assignments.  We also had the opportunity to work on art hub or finish our math centers.
  • Tinsel hid in Connor's pencil case!

December 19, 2018- Wembley's first day at school.

What did we do today?
  • In music we started with the drum mats.  Mr. O'Reilly showed us how to use them and we got a sheet to fill out with notes.  The notes were TM, BV, and SCH and SH.
  • During language arts, we started to watch the Polar Express movie.  While we watched it, we got a Venn diagram to fill out to compare the similarities and differences between the movie and the book.
  • In gym, the teams were mixed up. (Ms. Jones's fault!) So the teams who played two hockey/ ringette games switched games and played a team they already played.
  • We worked on finishing our math centers after caroling and after music.  Most of us are on the Christmas games now.  We also had a special visitor during our afternoon math class.
  • Tinsel hid in Jessica's shoe!

December 18, 2018- Let the Elf Games Begin!

What did we do today?
  • In computer lab, we got assigned our new laptops!  Then we had to finish our Mathletics and Raz-Kids tasks.  If we finished early, we went onto the cartooning websites Ms. Cowdy had bookmarked and we got to draw different Christmas characters.
  • After library, we finished our simile and metaphor activity from yesterday.  Then we discussed what a fact and an opinion is, before answering fact /opinion questions about the Polar Express.
  • In our math period, we started with caroling.  Afterwards we continued to work on our centers and started Christmas themed games such as The Elf Game, The Christmas Tree Farm and Christmas Treasure.
  • In caroling, we were the big kids today as the grade 5/6 students were on a field trip.  We sang Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Mr. Grinch and Dashing Through the Snow (Canadian edition).

December 17, 2018- The Northern Lights!

What did we do today?
  • In art, we watched a video on how to create the northern lights using chalk rubbing.  We first made a snow scape before using white paper to create the lights.  To create the reflections in the water, we took some of the colours we used for the northern lights and we rubbed into the paper.
  • In gym today, we started playing either hockey or ringette games.  We were put into teams and Ms. Jones was looking for good sportsmanship, skills and team co-operation.
  • During language arts, Ms. Jones re-read the Polar Express and we had to listen for similes and metaphors.  These are comparisons of two different things using like or as (simile) or is/ was (metaphor).
  • In music, we learned how to beat box.  Mr. O'Reilly showed us an image of a drum kit. Ask me about the different drums.
  • Tinsel hid in the umbrella by the door.

Agenda:
What did we do today?
  • We started Fresh Air Friday by looking at our fractions in nature pictures.  We assessed them to see if they showed equal parts and determined if they were a fraction or not.  Then we went outside and did a survey about how many houses have Christmas lights.  Students that went above and beyond with following directions received a brag tag.
  • During our big pick up, we were timed to see if we could complete it in fifteen minutes.  We also discussed how we need to be leaders in helping our parents and community become better recyclers, as items were put in the wrong containers during the Festive Evening last night.
  • We had our last spelling test for 2018.
  • Tinsel hid in the computer tech cart.

December 13, 2018- Dressed for Festive Evening!

What did we do today?
  • In math, we continued our Christmas math centers.  Most of finished our  Santa through a maze sheet and are working on our fact families and fraction pages.
  • In social, it was our second day learning about fossil fuels and natural resources.  We learned about the oil sands and tailing ponds and how the companies try to keep wildlife away from them as they are made of chemicals and are toxic.
  • In gym, we did passing again for ringette. We played Keep Away before learning how to steal the ring from a person.  After, we practiced lifting a person's stick safely by playing shark.
  • During Daily Five, we had to finish our word work activities to hand in, we worked on our good copy of our Polar Express writing question and we did an assignment on Raz-Kids.
  • We also practiced our song for the Festive Evening.
  • Tinsel hid in the domino basket.

December 12, 2018- Tinsel On The Roof!

What did we do today?
  • In math, we continued our Christmas math centers.  Most of finished our rounding activity and are figuring out addition and subtracting to get Santa through a maze.
  • In science, we had more time to research information about our chosen animal.  We are expected to find the frequencies the species could hear, as well as come up with two interesting facts about their hearing/ ears.
  • In gym, we started ringette.  First we learned how to pass and spear the ring with a partner.  Then we played Clean Your Room and Dodge Ring, which was like dodgeball.
  • Tinsel hid up in the ceiling in the vent.

What did we do today?
  • In math, we started our Christmas math centers if we had finished our show what you know from the text.  Most of us started the rounding Christmas lights activity, where we had to round numbers into the tens and hundreds.
  • In science, we had more time to research information about our chosen animal.  Some of us had trouble finding information, so some people had to ask Ms. Cowdy where they could find it.  She started to find information and place it in the assignments box to help us.
  • In gym, we practiced passing by playing a game of take 3, where the offense had to keep the puck away from the defense.  We also practice face offs and shooting at the net.
  • In library, we exchanged books and then read to someone to help them understand the story.
  • In computer lab, we got another chance to draw a number of Christmas cartoons in our visual journals.
  • Tinsel hid in the soap dispenser.

  • In gym, we practiced passing the puck to each other through different drills and games.
  • During journals. we continued to work on our WOW #10 prompt from last week.  We needed to make sure with each reason we included two supporting details.
  • In math, Ms. Jones and Ms. Cowdy showed us the Christmas centers we will be doing over the next two weeks. They will cover concepts such as rounding, adding, subtracting and fractions.
  • We did the big pick up as well, since we were not here Friday.
  • Tinsel hid in the art bins today.

December 6, 2018- Snowball fight!!!!

What did we do today?
  • in social studies, we watched two videos about natural resources and fossil fuels.  We learned the three fossil fuels are coal, oil and natural gas.  These can produce environmental issues such as smog and health issues like asthma.  Fossil fuels are the most dominant source the world uses for power.
  • In gym, we had a snowball fight!  As part of our spirit day, we played four rounds.  If we got hit by a snowball we had to do jumping jacks while singing jingle bells.
  • In computer lab, we did dance mat typing.
  • In math, we finished our showing what we know task about adding and subtraction.
  • Tinsel hid in the curtain covering our class "window."

December 5, 2018- Making Jot Notes of our Animal Research

What did we do today?
  • In music, we practiced our song for the Festive Evening next week.  Our homework is to practice our given verses.
  • Today in science, we learned how to make our three word jot notes into sentences using our own words.  Then we got the opportunity to try making jot notes for ourselves while researching our own animal.
  • In journals, we talked about how to write the response to the question "What if you were chosen to receive the first gift of Christmas."
  • We did Raz-Kids during computer lab.  We also changed our passwords to make our accounts safer.
  • In gym, we played two games to practice stick handling.  We played Recycle and Shark.
  • Tinsel hid by the door in a folder box.

December 4, 2018- Tinsel has arrived!

What did we do today?
  • In science, we talked about how to make jot notes and how to identify the main idea and its supporting details when reading from books.
  • In gym, we did some more hockey drills.  Our substitute had us practicing our dribbling skills, a trap contest and we played a game called hockey hoopla.
  • Today in math, we started a unit review of adding and subtracting, as we are close to finishing that unit.
  • During Daily 5, we worked on a number of tasks.  Ms. Jones's guided reading group had to draw four pictures of a character showing different feelings. We also had library at this time.
  • We were read more of The Wild Robot.  Roz saw a opossum and she thought it was dead, but it was playing dead.  The two characters talked about acting and Roz decided she needs to act more friendly.
  • During computer lab, we practicing dance mat typing.
  • After lunch, we played a brain game where we had to find a partner and remember the order of ten numbers that were drawn from a pile.
  • We found Tinsel this afternoon, covered in an avalanche of dried up markers.  Hope he finds a more comfortable spot tomorrow.

December 3, 2018- Mathletics Monday

What did we do today?
  • In art, we finished our Best Part of Me writing.  We made a frame for the writing and the pictures we took and we put them together.
  • During language arts, Ms. Jones read us the book, The Polar Express.  We were then given our journal prompt for the week which is "If you were picked to choose the first gift of Christmas, what would you choose and why?"  We then brainstormed ideas and reasons.  We also completed a read to self summary for Daily 5.
  • Today in gym we started floor hockey.  Using either a ball hockey ball or a felt puck, we practiced stick handling and dribbling.  We also played the game follow the leader, where the follower needed to stay close to the leader to earn points.
  • In music, we started to practice our song for the festive evening.  We were placed into three groups that each have a different part in the song, which is a surprise!
  • At the end of the day, the Elf on the Shelf book was read out loud.  Now we wait for Tinsel to arrive.
  • In math, we started to work on addition and subtraction word problems.  Ms. Jones showed us some clue words to help us decide which operation to choose.
  • During computer lab, we worked on our Mathletics assignments.

What did we do today?
  • For our Fresh Air Friday lesson, we went outside we looked for different fractions in nature.  Each person had to find a fraction of a set and a fraction of a whole.
  • During our big pick up, Ms. Cowdy talked about what to do with a pizza box.  There was wax paper in it, which goes in the landfill.  The tin foil on the wax paper could be peeled and put into the recycling.  The pizza box, since it has food and grease on it, actually goes into the compost bin!

What did we do today?
  • In science, we started our animal ear research.  Ms. Jones wanted us to look in books to find information about their diet and location.
  • In gym, we went on the traverse wall again and we played mirror mirror, where we had to copy the person who went first.  After we played colour elimination.
  • Today during Daily 5, we had to complete a list of tasks.  We had to complete both our rough and good copy about the best part of me.  We also had time to finish our word work activities and if we finished those we could go onto Raz-Kids.
  • We had little buddies today!  We helped them change their passwords, put Starfall as one of their bookmarks and log out.
  • In math, we finished our subtraction work from the textbook and if we finished early we played a game called What's the Difference.

  • Today in music, we saw the CBC Music Challenge videos from last year and this year.  It will be uploaded by tomorrow.

November 27, 2018- Animal Ear ResEARch

What did we do today?
  • In science, we played the listening game, which is like heads up seven up.  We made noises using objects we found in nature two weeks age and then we would guess what it was that made the sound.  We were also given our animal hearing project, where we will have to research where it lives, the frequency they can hear and draw a picture with us and its ears.
  • In gym today, we did the climbing wall.  Ms. Jones would eliminate a colour grip that we could not use.  She eliminated green, which was really hard.
  • This morning in math, we started to solve subtraction questions using bigger numbers.  Ms. Jones also challenged us to show two ways of subtraction in our work.
  • We had two Daily 5 blocks today.  During our first Daily 5, we had to work on our word work activities, which are due Friday. In the second one we practiced handwriting and had library.
  • In computer lab, we did dance mat typing.

November 26, 2018- The Best Part of Me in Pictures

What did we do today?
  • For social studies, we researched information about and list the fun activities you can do at each provincial/ national park.  Writing On Stone was home to the Blackfoot thousands of years ago.  In Lesser Slave Lake, you can go kite surfing.  And Lakeland Provincial Park was founded in 1953.
  • In art, we took a photo for our The Best Part of Me writing project.  We learned how to crop photos using the iPad.
  • In music, we journaled about the CBC Music Project.  We had to write about what we could do better and what we struggled with.  We also watched a couple of other schools entries.
  • In math, we are starting subtraction.  Ms. Jones showed us three different ways: the traditional way, counting down and using the base ten blocks.

November 22, 2018- The Ear is Here to Hear!

What did we do today?
  • In science, Ms. Jones gave us a sheet with unfinished sentences about how we hear.  We had to fill in the blanks using the parts of the ear to explain how sound waves become the sounds we recognize. We also brainstormed questions we want to research for our animal hearing project and we worked on our cartoon selves with animal ears.
  • We recorded our CBC Music video today for the challenge.
  • In social studies, we continued to research information about the parks in Alberta. Jasper National Park is the largest park in the Rockies.  In Lesser Slave Lake Park, the north side of the park elevates up to the mountains.
  • We did the big pick up today since we have no school tomorrow.
  • In Daily 5, we worked on our journals and the word work assignments we were given.

November 21, 2018- Take 2!

What did we do today?
  • We had two musics today.  The first one was the rehearsal with all the grade 3-6's.  The second music class we practiced our role in the performance and we watched three videos that had the same tune to them.
  • In math, we showed Ms. Jones what we know about addition with bigger numbers, place value and using rounding to estimate.
  • We had gym outside today with room 5 at the end of the day, as they missed their gym time due to the music practice.
  • In language arts, we started to write our journal entry about what our best part is and why.  We used opinion sentence starters to add variety to our sentences and we learned to group ideas in paragraphs.
  • Ms. Jones read more from The Wild Robot.  Bears attacked her after she stumbled into their cave.  She also learned from a stick insect how to camouflage and to stay hidden on the island.

What did we do today?
  • This morning, we practiced for the CBC Music Challenge with the grade 5/6 classes.
  • In math, we played two rounding games called Around and Around, as well as Rounding Off Big Time.  We also taught the students from room 5 these games if they finished their work early.
  • We had gym outside today with room 5, as they missed their gym time due to the music practice.
  • In language arts, Ms. Jones read us the book, The Best Part of Me.  They had written poems to go with their black and white photos.  We also had library during this time, where we had to read with someone.
  • We got new words for our word study this week.  Ms. Cowdy has given us sheets with words to help us sort and practice.

November 19, 2018- Drawing Our Cartoon Selves

What did we do today?
  • In art, we watched a video from the youTube channel Art Hub for Kids on how to draw a boy or girl as a cartoon.  Ms. Jones also read us a book called What if You Had Animal Ears to give us ideas for our science project.
  • During journals, we thought about what the best part of us was, based on a black and white photograph book.  We will be taking a picture and writing our opinion about it.  We started to brainstorm reasons why a certain part would be special.
  • In music, we worked on our CBC music project.
  • In gym, we started using the traverse wall.  We went over the safety rules before trying the wall with a spotter.
  • Today in computer lab we partnered up with a buddy and we worked on our social research of a provincial or national park in Alberta.

November 16, 2018- Souper Can Winners!!

What did we do today?
  • We played two listening games for Fresh Air Friday.  We played a mystery noise game where we collected items from outside to make a noise.  We then had three guesses to determine what made those noises.  Objects used included: sticks, newspaper, rocks, grass, pine cones and bark.
  • We also played a game like Marco Polo, but we called it Dr Coffin.  The person who was it would call, "Dr" while the class called, "Coffin" and they would have to find and tag a person.
  • In science, we finished our plasticine ear models while Ms. Jones began to read us the book The Wild Robot.
  • We had our spelling test this morning and we did the school wide big pick up.
  • We won the Souper Can award for bringing in the most food for the food drive.

What did we do today?
  • In gym, we had our last day of tennis.  We played mini games using the nets.
  • We had little buddies!  We helped them finish their buddies name letter activity.
  • In science, we started to make models of the ears using plasticine.  We had to use different colours to show all the different parts of the outer, middle and inner ears.
  • During math, we started looking at equations with missing numbers, which Ms. Jones called beginner algebra.  Then we practiced with some questions and if we finished early played some addition math games.
  • Today in Daily 5, we had to finish our WOW journal about the Olympic bid.  We had to COPS our work and identify all our sentence starters.  Ms. Jones gave us some sentence starter ideas for opinion writing for us to use.

November 14, 2018- Which park would you visit?

  • Spelling words for this week have been sent home- quiz this Friday.
What did we do today?
  • During journals we discussed the arguments for and against saying yes to the Olympic bid, which we know is a no.  Then we finished our opinion on it as well as wrote about our favourite winter Olympic sport.
  • In music, we kept practicing for the CBC music challenge.  We will be practicing and filming the final video next week. 
  • Today in math, we played addition games to master our addition skills by creating the greatest sums.
  • In social studies, we chose an Alberta park to research and create an informative pamphlet on its location, fun activities and landforms.
  • In gym, we started to play mini tennis games using nets, while maintaining control of the tennis ball.

November 13, 2018- Constable Rich Visits




Agenda:

  • Homework: math grade 3 pg. 98-99; grade 4 pg. 57-58 due tomorrow
  • Spirit club tomorrow at lunch.

  • Spelling words for this week have been sent home- quiz this Friday.
What did we do today?
  • Constable Valstar came to visit us today.  He talked about the gear that the olice wear and he also explained how having all kinds of emotions are ok.  He spoke about the emotions scale and how we make good choices when we are happy/ok.  We also learned about WITS, which stands for: walk away, ignore, talk about it and seek help.
  • In gym, we played tennis.  We rallied against the wall.  We also practiced keeping the tennis ball in our assigned zones while rallying to each other. 
  • Today in math, we practiced adding sums with two, three and four digit numbers.  If we finished early, we played a game called Sum It Up where we would draw cards and make numbers to add together, trying to create the biggest sum.
  • During computer lab, we worked on dance mat typing.
  • We also had library and worked on our opinion of whether Calgary should go ahead and bid for the Olympics.

November 12, 2018- Day One of Tennis

  • Constable Valstar will be our special guest tomorrow afternoon.  He will be here to tell us about the Emotion Scale.
  • Spirit club Wednesday at lunch.

What did we do today?
  • In music, we worked on our CBC project.  Our paradise scene is really coming together!
  • In journals, we discussed whether we were for or against bidding for the Olympic Games in 2026.  We then started writing our three reasons for/ against and we also wrote about our favourite Winter sport.
  • In gym, we started using the tennis racquets.  We practiced bouncing the tennis ball on the floor and off the racquet.  We also worked on our forehand volleys by hitting the ball against the wall.
  • Today in art, we were shown a book called What If Your Had Animal Ears?  We were then given different pages with how to draw animals as a cartoon.  We practiced drawing ones we liked as we will need them for a future project.
  • During computer lab, we did Mathletics.  Some people finished their assignments.

November 9, 2018- We remember

What did we do today?
  • For Fresh Air Friday, we took an ipad outside and we measured the decibels of sounds we heard outside.  We also determined if the sounds were safe, could potentially cause hearing damage or were dangerous to our ears.
  • In science, we watched a video of how your ear works.  It reviewed the three parts of the ear. The three tiny bones are called the ossicles.
  • We had our Remembrance Day assembly to pay our respects to those who have served.

November 8, 2018- How Ears Work

  • Remembrance Day assembly tomorrow at 10:45am. If you are a cubs or girl scout, please wear your uniform. Don't plan to wear your baseball caps.
  • Please bring a donation for the poppy fund tomorrow.
  • Fresh Air Friday tomorrow, please be sure your child is wearing proper outdoor gear to be outside (winter coats, winter boots, toque, mitts).

What did we do today?
  • In language arts, we finished our acrostic poems and poppy art.  They are hanging in the gym for tomorrow's assembly.
  • In gym, we played badminton with a new team from yesterday.
  • In science, we started our study about the ears and how sound is made.  We tested different vibration sounds to determine their pitch and frequency.
  • We also learned how our ears work.  The sound enters the ear, travels down the ear canal, hits your ear drum, which causes your hammer, anvil and stirrup to vibrate.  The vibrations cause liquid in the cochlea to move which sends a message to the brain.
  • Our fingers showed their dancing skills over keys with dance mat typing and Mathletics.

What did we do today?
  • In language arts, we finished our rough copies of our poems and started to type them out.
  • This afternoon, in social we watched a video about the different destinations in Alberta.  After we wrote why the different landscapes were shown.
  • In math, we finished our rounding text book work.  If it wasn't finished, it is for homework due tomorrow.
  • In gym, we played 4 on 4 badminton games.
  • In music, we recorded our musical rendition of the big yellow taxi with percussion, piano and the xylophones.
  • We practiced our typing skills with dance mat typing.

What did we do today?
  • In our Language arts/art class, we finished our poppies and we are working on acrostic poems to go with them. They will be a part of the assembly artwork this Friday and Ms. Jones will choose two students to read their poems at the assembly.
  • In gym, we practiced underhand and backhand serves with badminton racquets and birdies.
  • During word study, we got new words to sort and learn over the next week.  
  • In math, we learned about rounding and using it to estimate sums with addition questions.

What did we do today?
  • In art, we worked on making a picture of a poppy.  They will be a part of the assembly artwork this Friday.
  • During journals, Ms. Jones read us a Remembrance Day story and we brainstormed words to make an acrostic poem.
  • During gym, we started racquet sports.  We practiced hitting the ball using underhand, overhand, backhand and forehand volleys.  Then we played a game like squash where we hit the ball against the wall.
  • In math, we continued our counting money tasks and played mystery money if we finished early.

November 2, 2018- A Silent Walk

What did we do today?
  • During our Fresh Air Friday class, we went on a listening walk to start our new hearing and sound unit in science.  We created a sound map and recorded the different sounds we heard using a legend.  We also had to determine where we heard the sound in regards to where we were standing.
  • Because many of the classes were out, we practiced our announcements, which we will do next week instead.
  • This morning we had our spelling tests.  Ms. Jones is hoping she will see the great scores she saw with our first one.

November 1, 2018- Can you complete the Greg Tang Challenge?

What did we do today?
  • We had a catch up time this afternoon to finish our social, journal writing and the Greg Tang math challenge.  If we finish the challenge, we get a certificate and our name is entered to win a prize.
  • In math, we started working with money.  The grade 4's worked with a grade 3 buddy to count different amounts of money.  The grade 4's had to record their answers using decimals while the grade 3's recorded it all in cents.
  • During gym, we played a mini game of volleyball where we served the ball over the net.  The opposite team would catch the ball then pass it to a team mate for them to bump it back over.
  • In science we practiced our public service announcement scripts for tomorrow.

October 31, 2018- Pumpkin Estimating and Halloween Fun

  • Bring headphones (not wireless) to school for tech class.  We are not sharing headphones due to lice.

  • Whoops! Ms. Jones forgot to put this on the blog (candy brain!).  Spelling test this Friday
  • Fire plan and class photos sent home today.
What did we do today?
  • In science, we watched WALL-E.  WALL-E was programmed to compact the garbage left by humans.  The humans left Earth because there was so much garbage and no plants.
  • In math, we applied our estimation skills doing a pumpkin investigation.  After making observations about the pumpkin, we cut it open and took out the seeds and pumpkin guts.  Then we chose a referent to use and estimated the number of seeds that were in the pumpkin.  We had extra time, so we carved them with faces and put them in the pumpkin patch for the parade.
  • During gym, we played a dodgeball game called pumpkin patch.  If we got hit by the ball, we went to the other team's pumpkin patch.  We were saved if we were able to catch a ball thrown by our teammates.
  • This afternoon we had the Halloween parade.  Our classmates were dressed as dinosaurs, beanie boos, video game characters monsters and animals.
