October 31, 2018- Pumpkin Estimating and Halloween Fun


Agenda:

  • Fresh Air Friday on Friday
  • Whoops! Ms. Jones forgot to put this on the blog (candy brain!).  Spelling test this Friday
  • Fire plan and class photos sent home today.
What did we do today?
  • In science, we watched WALL-E.  WALL-E was programmed to compact the garbage left by humans.  The humans left Earth because there was so much garbage and no plants.
  • In math, we applied our estimation skills doing a pumpkin investigation.  After making observations about the pumpkin, we cut it open and took out the seeds and pumpkin guts.  Then we chose a referent to use and estimated the number of seeds that were in the pumpkin.  We had extra time, so we carved them with faces and put them in the pumpkin patch for the parade.
  • During gym, we played a dodgeball game called pumpkin patch.  If we got hit by the ball, we went to the other team's pumpkin patch.  We were saved if we were able to catch a ball thrown by our teammates.
  • This afternoon we had the Halloween parade.  Our classmates were dressed as dinosaurs, beanie boos, video game characters monsters and animals.

October 30, 2018- Practicing our Public Service Announcements

Agenda:

  • Pumpkin seed estimating activity tomorrow.  Thank you to the volunteers who can make it!
  • Halloween Parade tomorrow in the afternoon around 1:15pm. Halloween costumes to be worn in the afternoon only.
What did we do today?
  • In gym, we practiced our underhand serving skills by creating rainbows and playing a game with a buddy called rebound points.
  • In math, we practiced our estimating skills by using referents and eyeballing skills to answer a number of questions and a marble center.  We learned to use vocabulary such as half, a quarter and approximately.  Tomorrow we will be using these skills to estimate seeds in a pumpkin.
  • During science, we got together with our Green Team members and started to practice the public service announcement we are going to share with classes and staff in regards to our current recycling habits and how we can improve them.  We will be going to classes on Friday.
  • After taking out new books from the library, we read to someone new in our class and checked for their understanding.

October 29, 2018- Mathletics Monday

Agenda:

  • Treat day tomorrow! Bring 25¢
  • Four parent volunteers are needed for Wednesday morning to help with our pumpkin seed estimating.
  • Halloween Parade Wednesday October 31 in the afternoon. Halloween costumes to be worn in the afternoon only.
What did we do today?
  • In gym, we started practicing our underhand serves over the net.  We practiced in pairs and then we played meteor shower where we had to listen for when to serve.
  • In art, we worked very hard to finish our pumpkin art for Wednesday's parade.  If we finished it and our social, we were given instructions to follow to create a haunted house.
  • In math, we watched a video on how to estimate using referents.  We can use referents of 5, 10, 20, 25 or 100.
  • In music, we are working hard for our production for the CBC Music Contest.  The production crew worked on a trifold of what paradise looks like.  We also practiced our instruments and the lyrics.
  • During computer lab, we worked on Mathletics.
  • For journals, we shared our writing about our costumes and we had to share what we liked about their writing.  Then we went back to ours and tried to improve it.

October 25, 2018- Daily 5 Pick Up!

What did we do today?
  • In language arts, Mrs. Yoon read us the story A Scarecrow's Dance and Ms. Jones wrote down juicy action words from the book down.  Then we had to do the same with a different picture book.  We also had to organize words into nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
  • We are very close to finishing are social project.  Please watch the bulletin board to see our work!
  • This morning in gym, we practiced our bumping skills by completing given patterns and by playing Forever 21.
  • We did the big pick up this afternoon!

October 24, 2018- Can I Show You A Math Game?

What did we do today?
  • In math, the grade 4's worked on a logic problem with Ms. Jones before playing a card game where we had to put numbers drawn in a carroll diagram.  The grade 3's finished some text work, then we played a game where we had to make 1000 using base ten blocks.
  • Today in music, it was our second day working on the CBC Music Challenge.  We are in different groups: an instrument group (xylophones), percussion, a production crew, and singers.
  • This morning in gym, we got a partner to practice our bumping skills for volleyball.  We also played two games to practice this skill too.  One was called PASS and the other was Forever 21.
  • We had time to work on our Alberta region pennants and our pumpkin art.

October 19, 2018- Hunting for Garbage

What did we do today?
  • This morning we had our first spelling test in our word work groups.
  • When we were outside, we played nutrient tag.  We were either herbivores, carnivores, decomposers or a human.  In the first round there were no humans, but in the second round there was.  We noticed that more animals and decomposers "died" during the round where humans were in the game because cutting down trees where the herbivores got their nutrients from and they would take away the decomposers needed to put the nutrients back in the game.
  • After the game, we picked up garbage that we were finding on the field and playground.  We found items such as straws, plastic, gloves, rotten fruit and glass.  We will be sorting these items next week to determine if there are any patterns to the littering.

October 18, 2018- Testing our soccer skills..... and our limits.

What did we do today?
  • We had a catch up class today.  We had time to finish our writing prompt about where we would go with a friend and then had time to work on our Alberta Region pennants.
  • In Daily 5, some groups had to see Ms. Jones for guided reading or book club assignments.  While she works with those students, we worked on word work, finishing our writing or went on Raz-Kids.
  • During computer lab, we went onto our IRIS accounts and posted a photo of work we are most proud of.
  • In gym, Ms. Jones had us perform a variety of soccer skills to mark us for our soccer unit.  We start volleyball next week.

October 17, 2018- We Are All Part of the Nutrient Cycle.

What did we do today?
  • In music, we finished sharing our instrument research.  Then we started to practice the song for the CBC Music Chellenge.
  • During computer lab, Ms. Cowdy showed us how to open photobooth and share a photo onto our IRIS accounts.
  • In science, we played this game that helped us understand the waste cycle.  The herbivores would take a bean bag from a hoop.  They could be tagged by carnivores, who would steal their bean bag.  The decomposers could tag anyone, and they returned the bean bag to the hoops to be taken again.
  • In math, the grade 4's sorted numbers and dinosaurs using Carroll Diagrams while the grade 3's counted by 5s, 10, 25s and 100s..

What did we do today?
  • Since it was nice out, we played soccer games outside.  We needed to pass four times to teammates before trying to score.

  • Today in computer lab we went to the library and did Raz Kids, we read a book and did a quiz.
  • In social studies we worked on our regions rough draft and some of us worked on our good drafts.
  • Today in daily 5 we worked in our work groups; groups 3 and 4 worked on their spelling list.

What did we do today?
  • Since it was nice out, we played soccer games outside.  We needed to pass four times to teammates before trying to score.
  • In art, we worked on finishing the orange side of our pumpkin art.  We also were called to get our spelling words for this week.
  • In music, we continued to share facts about the instruments we researched.
  • During language arts, we had to write about where we would go with our friends.  Mrs. Yoon gave us some questions to help us guide our ideas and with what to write.
  • This morning in math, the grade 3's learned about comparing numbers, with the grade 4's sorted numbers with the three Venn diagrams.

October 12, 2018- Burying Garbage

What did we do today?
  • In science we chose 11 items to bury under the ground near the amphitheater. We drew what they are and what we think they will look like in June, when we dig them back up.  Ms. Cowdy explained how landfills work and we are going to see if these items are biodegradable.  We also looked at a sample of dirt to see if there is any decomposers. 
  • We also had word work.  In our groups, we were given different tasks, which helped us practice the word skills we are studying.  Next week, we will be having a spelling test with those words.

What did we do today?
  • We had a special visitor that writes books.  She is from Saskatoon and she has written a book which is now in our library called Polly Diamond and the Magic Book.  She told us how she writes books.  First she develops an idea and does some research.  Then she creates a storyboard with her ideas.  Sometimes she swaps the events to make the storyboard.  Then she interviews her characters. Then she writes and has many edits done to it.
  • In daily 5, we started our Daily 5 routine.  Each group got their own checklist of what they needed to do.  We worked on word work, our journals, Raz Kids or worked with the teacher.
  • In social studies, we continued to research our Alberta region.  Some of us finished our rough copy and are starting our good copy.  To research info, we were also allowed to use a digital textbook.
  • In math, the grade 3's played a place value banker game while the Grade 4's learned sorting strategies from Ms. Jones.

What did we do today?
  • In music, we started sharing our slides and posters about the instrument we researched.
  • In social, Ms. Jones assigned us a region in Alberta for us to learn about and make jot notes on climate, landforms, wildlife and the plants found there.
  • During computer lab, we had to sign in onto our Raz Kids accounts, read a book and complete a quiz.  Ms. Cowdy suggested to read one book and do the quiz a week.
  • In gym, we played keep away again, focusing on controlling the ball in small spaces and passing.
  • We had more time to work on our journals about what we found in the garbage.

  • During library, we had to read to someone, choosing a different buddy from last week.
  • For journals, we talked about the garbage sort we did last Friday.  Ms. Jones gave us a reference sheet to use to help us write a PSA for the room we are in charge of about how they can recycle and compost better.
  • We had a lockdown drill this morning before recess.
  • In gym, we played keep away where we had to pass the soccer ball around while others tried to intercept.
  • We had our first word study class.  We were put into three groups where we worked on different word activities.

What did we do today?
  • We did the Terry Fox run outside. All together, we ran 230 laps which is equivalent as running 115 km!
  • Today we were Green Team superheroes! We collected the garbage and surveyed what we saw in the garbage.  We then sorted it correctly as many items found could be composted or recycled.  Then we did the big green team pickup for the school.
  • There was also an assembly prior to the run, where we did a number of warm up activities to get us ready for the Terry Fox run.

What did we do today?
  • In science, we went to different areas of the school to check out what is in the garbage. We shared what we found and sorted the items as to whether they could be recycled, put in compost, reused or goes to the landfill.
  • In social studies, we watched a video showing images of the different regions in Alberta.  Then we read about each one and we choose three that we would like to do research on.
  • In gym we played a game called dribbling tag where we had to keep the soccer ball away from our partner.
  • The grade three's are almost done their SLA's and have started to work on dance mat typing with the grade 4's.

October 3, 2018- Dribbling through the rainforest

What did we do today?
  • In gym we played a game called Rainforest where we had to dribble around "trees" (cones) while paying attention to Ms. Jones for directions.  If we hit a tree, we had to do 6 top taps before dribbling again.
  • In social studies, we watched a video about the six different regions of Alberta.  Then we had to colour the regions on a map of Alberta.  The regions are: Parkland, Boreal Forest, Rocky Mountains, Canadian Shield, the Foothills and Grasslands.
  • This afternoon in music, we had more time to work on our posters/ slides about a musical instrument.
  • We were read a book about Terry Fox to help us with ideas for our What makes him a hero journal.  We had time to write that this afternoon and we will have one more period to finish it tomorrow.

What did we do today?
  • In computer lab, the grade 3's finished their numeracy SLA while the grade 4's practiced their typing skills on Dance Mat Typing.
  • In social studies, we looked in an atlas for the cities in Alberta and plotted them on a given map.
  • During gym, we played a game called shark then another game called soccer hoopla.
  • We learned how to be a good reader and listener when reading to someone.  We also did a brain game where we had to listen and recall three events in order.

October 1, 2018- Bring Toonies for Terry

What did we do today?
  • During gym, we did two laps around the field to work on our endurance for the Terry Fox Run. After, we started our soccer unit with dribbling skills and stopping by trapping the ball.
  • In art, we started a symmetry pumpkin project where we have designed half the pumpkin on orange paper.
  • During our math block, we built an object out of base ten blocks, trying to build a number between two given numbers.  Then after we had to represent that number in different ways.
  • For journals, we watched a video about Terry Fox and we made notes about why he is a hero.
  • In music, we started to make our slides/ posters about the instrument we did research on.
