What did we do today?
  • We were introduced to division today!  Ms. Jones went over some strategies that were very similar to multiplication.  Then we tried a couple of questions we were comfortable with.  After gym, we finished our SCOOT activity from yesterday.
  • For gym, we started our new unit of floor hockey.  We practiced some puck/ball handling skills and then we played keep away.
  • After recess, we had science and we finished working on completing our instrument. For those of us who did, we worked on our experiment lab booklets, making a hypothesis and recording our observations about pitch.
  • During Health, we reviewed DOF.  We brainstormed a time where we have either been a Destroyer of Fun or have played with one and what our strategies should have been. Then we shared.
  • In language arts, we wrote 5-8 sentences about our favourite thing to do.  After Ms. Jones took a couple of examples and we worked together to identify how we can start the sentences better.  Then we went back to our work and tried to edit for broken record starters.
  • We had music today.
  • During Daily 5, some of us had guided reading while the rest of us worked on a daily 5 activity.  We need to have three done by the end of the week.

Questions:
We did not have time today.

What did we do today?
  • At the start of the day in math, we all were given subtraction problems at our level to solve.  When we finished, we had to search for addition and subtraction problems scattered around the class, which we had to solve.
  • For gym, we played basketball games to finish the unit.  We switched teams so that we got to work with different people.
  • After recess, we had science and most of us have brought our materials.  A few of us finished the construction.  During this time, we also had a practice lockdown drill with Constable Johnson.
  • During Read Aloud, Remi and Marty found who the Night Watchman is...it is Father Sasseville, the priest from the town's church.
  • During Daily 5, some of us had guided reading while the rest of us worked on a daily 5 activity.  We need to have three done by the end of the week.
  • We returned and checked out new books during library.
  • At the end of the day in art, we continued to work on the first picture for our Alberta timeline.  It is from 300-400 million years ago when there was nothing but water and simple animal and plant life.

Questions:
1. What will be some of the drills we will do for hockey and ringette?
2. How will Marty and Remi question Father Sasseville about his alien connections and how will he react?

What did we do today?
  • In math, Ms. Jones taught us two ways to subtract numbers with zeros, like 1000.  One way was to borrow from a far away neighbour.  The other way was to cross the whole top number and take away one, so 999.  Then you subtract as normal, but then you add 1 to the difference to get the answer.
  • In gym, we played a game called add it up.  We started this game yesterday.  We added two balls, two shooters and a 3 point shot if we got the basket outside the key.
  • During Read Aloud today, Remi shoved Marty's face into the snow so that the French kids would not beat them up.  Some of us painted our animal self portraits during this time too.
  • After Read Aloud, we took turns playing the xylophones.  Then we used rhythm stick to play given notes by the teacher.
  • We had a catch up time to complete work for tonight.  If we completed it we went onto Matheletics.
  • In Daily 5, we got a passport.  We had to mark what activities we have completed during Daily 5 time these last two weeks.
  • At the end of the day we got the classroom ready for conferences.  Our desk trays are out in the hallway so our parents can see our work.

Questions:
1. Will Marty get his revenge at Remi for throwing a snowball at his back?
2. Will Marty and Remi find more clues about the Watchman?

  • In gym, we completed the last center that we didn't do.  Then Ms. Jones explained a game where if your number was called, you had to dribble to the net and try to score points.  The rest of your group would pass the ball.
  • In science, we chose an instrument, copied down the materials and how to make our instrument (procedure).  If we finished early, we drew a labeled diagram of the instrument and made a hypothesis about how we are going to change the pitch.
  • In health, we reviewed the strategies of how to change from a Destroyer of Fun.  Then we played a game called Whoosh, bang, pow.  This game had us passing energy in a circle.  You made a whoosh motion and sound.  If someone said pow, the energy had to change direction.
  • In language arts, we worked on spooky stories, our self portraits or a work on writing activity.
  • In music, we had to list some dynamics.  After that, we played a game called Four square dynamics.  You have to find a dot and wait for the corner to be called.  If you are in that corner, you are out.
  • At the end of the day we finished with Daily 5.

Questions:
1. Is the Night Watchman an alien or a human?
2. Which Unthinkable will we discuss next?

What did we do today?

  • For Fresh Air Friday, we first watched two videos.  The first one was to get us excited about paleontology.  During the second one, we had to carefully watch for the steps that a paleontologist does when they find a fossil or dig site.  Paleontologists jacket their fossils with a protective coat to remove the fossil from the ground.  They also protect the site with tin foil around the fossils and plastic so that they can return the next day.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7zo2zY1Zqg&feature=related
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjhDV_GzTM8
  • As paleontologists, we had to prospect, map, observe and document a site in the Whispering Woods that we felt might have fossils.  We found a site first, then mapped the area by creating a meter grid with bamboo sticks and string.  After we finished, Ms. Jones or Ms. Cowdy would take a picture of our grid and we received the GPS coordinates to our site.  We then documented our observations and drew a picture of our grid in our paleontology field guides.  Some of us believe we have a legitimate fossil find in our dig sites.
  • We had a music practice today with Room 5 for our assembly next Thursday.

Questions:
1. What is our next unit in gym? Basketball
2. If we did find fossils, how many fossils will we have found?
3. Are we going to look in other areas like the nature grounds for fossils?
4. What is the next activity we are going to do in science?
5. What are the other classes doing for the Remembrance Day assembly?
6. Where will we go to find fossils, if we go to other places?

  • In health, we finished our rock brain moment reflection.  We then shared our moments with a group and received a sticker for completing it.
  • In language arts, we worked on our spooky stories.  If we finished, we had to COPS our work and share it with a friend.  After editing, we were able to type it out on the computer.
  • In music today we played a game where we had to keep the beat with rhythm sticks.
  • In Daily 5, we had the option of choosing Raz Kids, Read to Self or Read to Someone.
Questions:
1. Who will be the first to publish their spooky story?
2. Which group will be ready to perform their skipping routine first?

What did we do today?
  • This morning in math, the grade 3s continued designing chocolate bars and the grade 4s had to build arrays and partial products to multiply two digit by one digit numbers.
  • In gym, we kept on practicing and creating our routines with hoops and skipping ropes.  We need to have 4 hoop skills, 4 individual skipping skills and 2 partner skipping skills in our routine.
  • After recess, we had buddies.  We helped our little buddies log onto StarFall and together we did activities for the letters S,A, T and P.
  • We started our first class read aloud novel, which is Ms. Jones reading a chapter book to us.  It is called Mystery of the Frozen Brains by Marty Chan, the author who visited us two weeks ago.  We will be responsible for tasks in response to the book.
  • In Daily 5, we got to finish our Read to Self and Read to Someone activities.  Two guided reading groups started today as well.  Ms. Jones and Ms. Cowdy introduced Listen to Reading, where we will have to listen, read and complete a quiz for a book at our reading level.
  • At the end of the day, in language arts we worked on our spooky stories.  If we have not finished our planner today, we are to finish it for homework tonight.  That includes writing words for sounds, textures, smell and taste.
Questions:
1. When will we teach our buddies how to do the spiderweb and journal art?
2. What will we be doing with our buddies next?
