February 28, 2017- Tuesday at the Glenbow

Agenda:
Read 30 min
Homework: practice multiplication facts, math mystery #17 due Thursday
**There is a typo on this week's math mystery.  The sentence should say there are 3 more rabbits than birds.  So sorry about the confusion!**

What did we do today?
  • Today we went to the Glenbow Museum. We were in two groups, one group did an drawing activity of a circle, square and a triangle. We learned what a circle meant and how to read symbols. We looked at some symbols on a Siksika Shield, Woman's Leggings and a Tipi. The second group focused on choosing three artifacts and they made a title and story for the group of artifacts. Both groups went to 'Using Natural Resources' to find four or more artifacts that relate to natural resources. Afterwards, we returned to our parent groups and read the information about the natural resources. We looked at artifacts and guessed what industry they were from and what they were used for. We decided which two industries our community would practice. The industries we chose were: Farming and Ranching and Hydroelectric Power.
  • We ate lunch together at City Hall.
  • At the cafe we shared what we learned about symbols and the stories that we made about the three artifacts.
Questions:
1. What are some of the new things that we learned?
2. What were some of the stories that the students made up in Ms. Jone's group?
3. What does the square represent?
4. Where will we go for our next field trip?

Homework: practice multiplication facts, math mystery #17 due Thursday
Field trip tomorrow, please bring waste-less lunch, nothing to heat up please!

What did we do today?
  • This morning in math, we continued mastering our ninja skills by practicing our multiplication facts and earning our belts/ beads. We also got a new math mystery to solve by Thursday.  We will get marks for CUBES, solving the question, showing our work and writing the answer in a sentence.
  • In gym, it was the first day of Jungle Safari. We had to do this silently!  Some of the tasks were crawling under or over various objects, balancing a ball on a racquet while walking on a bench, walking only on the green lines, not getting touched by the skipping ropes on a crash mat and going across bars with the ropes to support you.
  • After gym, we went to visit our little buddies and to see their 100th day projects.  Some had 100 stickers, 100 pom poms, 100 Lego pieces, 100 Shreddies, 100 beads.
  • During science time, we started to talk abou how we are going to demonstrate our learning for our learning celebration in April.  Then we had time to work on our title pages.
  • In health, we reviewed what Brain Eater is and the strategies we can use to defeat it.  We assigned a tipi group member to keep track of our Brain Eater moments.
  • After lunch, we worked on our Daily 5 activities and we got a new chart to keep track of our progress.
  • At the end of the day in social studies, we talked more about the different ways the Blackfoot hunted the buffalo.  We watched two videos about Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump.  We started to journal about the sneak game we played Friday, as well as the ways they hunted.
Questions:
1. Which technique did they use first to hunt the buffalo: the jump or the corral/ pound?
2. What will we learn tomorrow during our field trip?

February 24, 2017- Catch the buffalo!

Agenda:
Read 30 min
Homework: practice multiplication facts
Field trip form due Monday
Planning form due Monday
Field trip next Tuesday

What did we do today?
  • We started the day with Daily "3", and caught up on some reading and writing tasks from the week.
  • We were put in groups today.  Our job was to act as surveyors and count the trees in a certain area of the Whispering Woods on a given map.  We had to count how many trees were on the Dr. Coffin property.  We counted a total of about 1 837 trees!  Ms. Jones reminded us about how Mrs. Gummo, our resident artist from last year, stated that every tree represents one buffalo that used to live on the land.
  • We played a game called Sneak Up outside where two students were the buffalo and the rest of us were hunters.  If the two buffalo turned around towards the hunter, the hunters had to stop and freeze.  If the buffalo saw any movement, they would call the hunter out and they would become a rock.  One thing that we learned was that there were three different ways the Blackfoot hunted the buffalo: using a buffalo jump, a pound to corral them or they chased them on horses, once they got horses in the 1800s. We also learned that the buffalo allowed white wolves near their herds.
Questions:

  1. What was the most efficient way of hunting buffalo?
  2. What are some of the other techniques they used to put up the tipis?
  3. What is the actual number of trees in the Whispering Woods?
  4. What other animals did the buffalos allow near their herds?

  • Before lunch in music, we continued our ukelele sessions and posted our videos to IRIS.

Then we got into our tipi groups and we created a design for the tipi we are going to make tomorrow.
