December 17, 2019- Is water a mineral?

Important Info:

Christmas carolling December 17th-19th
Last day of school is Thursday December 19th
December 20th is a PD day- no school that day
Classes resume January 6, 2020.

What did we learn today?
  • In gym we played a Christmas game called Frost Ball.  Then we played Bench ball.  Bench ball is a game where we had to catch the ball while standing on a bench.
  • We did the Great Elf Game where Ms. Jones rolls a dice, and if the number is a 1,2,3 or 4 it is a nice day and your elves make money and if she rolls a 5 or a 6 it is a bad day.
  • We started the day with Christmas carolling.  We sang Frosty, Mister Grinch, and I want a hippopotamus for Christmas.
  • Yesterday was Polar Express day.  One of our classmates got to take the train that picked up all the students home.

December 13, 2019- Erupting snow volcanos

What did we learn today?
  • Two days ago in social we watched a video about the murals in Coventry Hills.  After we watched the video, we drew pictures from the murals in our visual journals.  We also wrote some facts about the pictures that were on the mural.
  • Today we made volcanos out of snow!  First we made a base before adding baking soda, food colouring and vinegar to help them erupt.

December 10, 2019- The Glenbow and Christmas Lights

What did we learn today?
  • Today in math we started rounding numbers.  Ms. Jones gave us some questions to check our understanding.  When we were finished, we got to colour in and glue Christmas lights on the right line of lights according to what number they rounded to.
  • In art we started a new art project.  We made glowing lightbulbs using chalk pastels.  We have put them up on the bulletin board by our classroom.
  • In gym we started ringette,  Ms. Jones had us play shark and run around the gym, and we also practiced passing.
  • Yesterday we got to go to the Glenbow Museum.  We learned alot about rocks and the history of Calgary.

December 6, 2019- Ice shakers!

What did we learn today?
  • For Fresh Air Friday we went outside and we had to find a piece of ice.  We had plates and cups and we put our ice block into the cup and take turns shaking it 40 times.  Then we recorded our observations of what happened and related it to rocks falling down a mountain.
  • Yesterday an author and illustrator came and talked about their book about Christmas.
  • This was our last week of hockey, and we have been playing hockey games with no goalie and with passing rules.  The gym was split into two playing areas with one team wearing pinnies.

December 3, 2019- The future is yours!

What did we learn today?
  • Today in math the grade 3's counted by 5's, 10's and 100's and worked on page 57 in their booklets.  The grade 4's sorted numbers through Venn diagrams and Carroll diagrams.
  • In art we continued working on our Kandinsky place value circles.  We started glueing our cut out circles onto our backgrounds.  Most people didn't finish, so we will need more time.
  • Yesterday Leander's dad came and he is a geologist.  We learned a little geology about rocks and we got to touch some rocks too.  And he brought a meteorite!
  • In PE this week, we started doing hockey games.  We will be switching sides all week so everybody can versus each other.

November 29, 2019- Zippy (and Tinsel) zipping down the zipline!

Journal due Monday- If you received the first gift of Christmas, what would you ask for.  (Grade 3's need to write 9-11 sentences, Grade 4's need to write 12-15)

What did we learn today?
  • In language arts, we have been learning about similes and metaphors.  We know that similes have "like" or "as" in them, but metaphors need just a comparison.  We watched a funny video by the Bazillions to explain it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoSBVNUO2LU
  • Today for Fresh Air Friday, we did not go outside because it was too cold.  So we did an activity where we made a zipline for an elf on the shelf.  Then we tested them with a crayon stuffie.
  • For social studies, we watched a video about Calgary between 1961-1980.  Then we got into groups and were given a question about our community to brainstorm answers about, such as,"Where do people go in our community to feel good?" and "Why do people live in Brentwood?"
  • Yesterday in gym we did hockey again.  We played dribble keep away where three people tried to keep the puck away from the one defender.

November 26, 2019- Pj party

What did we learn today?
  • In science, we did an experiment with Starbursts, which represented the rock cycle.  We compressed, cemented, added heat and pressure to the Starbursts, making them different shapes and textures.  We put one in the microwave for 1 minute and it came out as Starburst oil.  It even had bubbles like igneous rocks! 
  • In language arts, we learned about similes and metaphors.  We watched a video then we sorted similes and metaphors from the story The Polar Express.
  • In math, we learned to compare and order numbers in grade 3 and how to sort numbers into Venn Diagrams in grade 4.
  • Today in gym, we did hockey.  We practiced our dribbling.  Then we got into buddies and did passing.
