January 31, 2018- I am Hagrid and I can not do gymnastics...

Agenda:
  • Read 20 min, social centers (music and dance, climate and living due tomorrow)

The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • At the end of the day, Ms. Jones read us more of Harry Potter.  Harry is trying to figure out who the giant is in the hut Mr. Dursley has taken them to.
  • Today in gym, we started with some stretches and strengthening exercises.  After we showed our routines from yesterday, we started centers where we had to practice different moves and partner tricks.
  • In music, Mr. O'Reilly showed us his electric guitars.  It came with many pedals that he uses to play.  One makes an echo, one shuts it off and one that changes the sound.
What do we need to do next?
We need to start using inferences when we are reading our fantasy books.

January 30, 2018- Similes coming soon!

The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • At the end of the day, we had catch up time to finish our simile art and our social centers.  Keep your eyes out for our artwork on the wall- coming soon!
  • Today in gym, we broke up into our groups and we developed routines that used one to four points to get from one side of the mat to the other side.  We will be sharing them tomorrow.
  • In music, Mr. O'Reilly had us finish our listening test.  We started a new unit called Music in Movies.  He would play a clip and we would have to decide what instruments were being played.
What do we need to do next?
We need to finish our Tunisia centers by tomorrow otherwise they will be for homework.

January 29, 2018- Let's get moving...

The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • At the end of the day in math, Ms. Jones read a bit of chapter 3 from Harry Potter to the class. Harry's punishment for letting the snake loose was staying in his cupboard room until summer holidays.
  • Today in gym, we started our first day of gymnastics.  We did a bunch of movement activities on the mats.  Ms. Jones explained the rules for us for this unit, such as to not wear loose clothing such as scarves or hoodies.
  • In Daily 5, we had to finish our journal about our pet's questions.  We also talked about visualizing while reading our fantasy books.
What do we need to do next?
We need to practice our stretches and balances to help us with our movements in gymnastics.

January 25, 2018- Things Wembley Would Ask...

The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • During Daily 5, we worked on a journal prompt about questions our pet might ask.  Then we had our spelling test and had time to work on our book covers.
  • Today in gym, we played a court wide volleyball.  We were in two teams and we had six tries to get the ball over the net.
  • At the end of the day, we got a catch up time for our social centers.  We still have one center that we have to complete before we move onto Peru.
What do we need to do next?
We need to move onto the next unit in gym, which will be gymnastics.  We will also have a week of yoga coming in February.

January 24, 2018- Gym at the Beach

The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • In music, we had a listening exam.  Mr. O'Reilly would play certain instruments and we had to write down what we thought the instrument was.
  • Today in gym, we played volleyball with beachballs.  We had to either set it or bump it.  We had three tries to get it over the net.
  • During computer lab, we were assigned to work on our art portraits.  We had to finish the typing of our similes to put onto our work.
What do we need to do next?
We have to finish our simile portraits, which include: four similes typed out, four pictures for the similes and a person or animal body made of construction paper.

January 23, 2018- A violin in a Tunisian orchestra.

The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • In the afternoon, we worked on our Tunisian centers.  The malouf is music played in Tunisia using the violin and a guitar.
  • Today in math, we continued to work on multiplication facts using "awesome" arrays.  We were given arrays and we had to figure out what the equations were.
  • In music, there were a bunch a different instruments set out.  We were allowed to try them out.  Mr. O'Reilly then told us that violins are usually the biggest number of instruments in an orchestra.  He introduced us to a tuning fork and what it is used for.
What do we need to do next?
We will be getting a catch up day to finish any of our Tunisian centers that we have not finished.

January 22, 2018- Adventures with Harry Potter

The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • During Daily 5, Ms. Jones read us most of chapter 1 from the book Harry Potter.  We then had to make sure we had a good fantasy genre book and we came up with two wonder questions about the book.
  • Today in art, we kept on working on our simile art.  We worked on our background and making the shapes for our animal/ person.
  • During gym, we played volleyball-type games.  We had to serve the ball over to the other team to catch.  If they caught the ball, they had to decide whether to set it over or pass it to a teammate to bump over.
What do we need to do next?
We need to practice our words at school and at home for our spelling test Thursday.

The Top Two Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • We did our drumming performance today.  We had an extra practice this morning so that we would not forget our parts.
  • After our practice, we got into our word work groups, where we sorted, looked for larger words with certain sound patterns and wrote good sentences.
What do we need to do next?
We have to pick our spelling words on Monday, so make sure you have your word work here.

January 18, 2018- Helping our buddies become star learners!

The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • In drumming, we practiced our song for tomorrow's performance.  After, our resident instructor Roger played a didgeridoo.
  • In social studies, we had a new center to complete.  One center is about etiquette.  Did you know that men cannot smoke in front of their fathers?  They also cannot carry their children in front of them? Also, men and women cannot go on dates until they are married?
  • Today in computer lab, we helped out little buddies get onto the computers and onto the Starfall program.
What do we need to do next?
Tomorrow for our drumming performance, we need to remember our parts to play and where we are to sit.

January 17, 2018- A boat plane flight to Tunisia

The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • Today we were put into new groups for social studies.  There was one "expert" in each groups, which means they had started the center yesterday.  We looked at arabic writing, Tunisian music and dance and climate.
  • During Daily 5 today, we started a new bell ringer where we had to copy a paragraph that had errors.  We had to find the errors and use our highlighters to mark them.  We learned that the first boat airplane took flight in 1914.
  • In math, we had to finish page 92, which had questions about skip counting.  If we finished, we went on Mathletics and did activities given to us by Ms. Jones.
What do we need to do next?
We need to keep working on our social centers because we need to "travel" to Peru next.

What we learned-

January 15, 2018- We are Ethno-music-tologists!

Agenda:
  • Homework: Read 20 min, bell ringer due, math (pg. 92 #1-3) due tomorrow

  • We have drumming all this week and a performance this Friday
  • Please make sure you are dressed for the weather 
The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • In our first class of drumming, we found out our teacher is quite funny!  We learned how to use our hands to make a pattern.  He showed us a big tar drum that would be used by people in the African desert because they were light to carry.  The drums we are playing come from West Africa where there is a lot more wood to find (the jungle).
  • In art, we picked a person or pet to write four similes about.  We then had to sketch them in our visual journals.
  • In gym, the volleyball nets were up.  As part of our warm up, we will now have to practice our underhand serves and to try and get them over the net.
What do we need to do next?
In art, we have to look up for pictures that will help us describe our similes.  We will put these pictures onto our sketches, that will be put outside in the hall for everyone to see.

January 12, 2018- Frozen bubbles...to be continued.....

Agenda:

The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • After our bell ringer, we had more shadow puppet shows about light and shadows.  Most of the plays spoke about opaque, translucent and transparent objects.  If you want to know about refraction, tune in next time as it is to be continued....
  • We went outside with the question,"What will happen to bubbles when out in freezing weather?"  In partners, we took turns blowing bubbles.  When they popped they looked like plastic.
  • We watched a video of two children reading the story Ferdinand.  The movie out now is about how to be a friend, as his friends helped him in a difficult time.  We talked about what qualities friends have and answered questions about when you would support one.
What do we need to do next?
Next time we do shadow puppets, we need to speak louder, put our puppets closer to the screen and make our puppets and the stage bigger.

January 12, 2018- Performing Puppets Power Half Hour

Agenda:

  • Please make sure you are dressed for the weather tomorrow, we will be doing a short outdoor activity tomorrow for Fresh Air Friday
The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • In science, we started to perform our shadow puppet plays.  They talked about opaque, transparent and translucent.  We found out shadow puppets were first made in China and that straws look broken in water due to refraction.
  • In our math block, Mr. O told us about the times tables.  We completed our work about multiplying by 0,1 and 10 and started questions about skip counting.
  • Today in daily 5, we learned more about similes and metaphors and we were given a worksheet to make different similes and metaphors.  Examples we made are: The fence was as rickety as an old construction site.  The clerk was as mean as Homer Simpson's boss Mr. Burns.  The fish was as slippery as frozen and polished ice.
What do we need to do next?
We need to finish our puppet plays by Monday!

January 10, 2018- Yay! A Blue Day

Agenda:

The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • Today in music, Mr. O'Reilly shared what his favourite instrument is, which is the saxophone.  He brought one in to show us and passed around the pieces.  Once he put it all together, he played it for us and it makes a really loud sound.
  • We had a Coffin Cares assembly, and Mrs. Polski talked about what a blue day was and what it looks like at Dr. Coffin.  She also read out the names of students who have shown respect for the environment, themselves and to others.
  • This afternoon in social studies, we made a map of Tunisia that showed the imports, exports, natural resources and transportation.  We learned that they use the iron ore found in the desert to make steel.  Then they sell it, which makes the country more money and jobs.
What do we need to do next?
In social studies, we will be put into groups to complete six more centers about the Tunisian culture and lifestyle.

January 9, 2018- Are you ready to be a puppet?

Agenda:
  • Homework: Read 20 min, bell ringer homework due tomorrow
  • Coffin Cares assembly tomorrow at 9:00am- wear your Dr. E.W.Coffin t-shirt, if you don't have one, wear the colours green or blue
The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • Today in art, we finished our puppets and scripts.  Groups that finished both worked together to build and create the screen we will be using to put on our shows.  Puppet shows about light and sound will start Thursday.
  • In music, Mr. O'Reilly brought in spoons for us to try out in a circle.  After sharing what we did over the break, he explained we will be studying Music Fascination for the month.  We also did a survey of what genre of music we liked.
  • In math, we started our multiplication unit.  We looked over our hundreds chart from yesterday and noticed the numbers coloured.  We used those numbers and put them into a blank multiplication table.
What do we need to do next?
We need to practice our plays using the screen and lights and to make sure the puppeteers are not seen by the audience.

January 8, 2018- Welcome Back!

The Top Three Things We Learned and Did Today:
  • This morning we shared and journaled about what we did over the winter break.
  • In math, we reviewed addition and subtraction through card games or extra practice.  We also looked at skip counting, as Ms. Jones has told us we are going to start multiplication this month.
  • This afternoon, we had time to work on our shadow puppets.  We are creating a play to show what we learned during our light and shadow unit.
What do we need to do next?
We need to finish our puppets and our scripts so that we can practice for our performances, which will start on Thursday.
