September 29, 2017- Run for Terry Fox

Agenda:
Please bring in your toonies for Terry. We are collecting until Tuesday.

Top Three Things We Learned Today

  • Today before the Terry Fox Run, the grade 5 and 6 students helped us prepare by leading us through some stretches.
  • We also had time to catch up on some work in math, social and Daily 5 before the run.
  • We did the Terry Fox Run.  Most of us were able to reach our lap goal from yesterday or beat it.  We ran 129 laps all together, which is the same as 129 km.  We learned that is the same distance from Calgary to Drumheller.
What do we need to do next?
We need to keep collecting toonies for cancer research so that we can find a cure for cancer.

Top Three Things We Learned Today

  • It was Mr. O'Reilly's birthday today.  We also worked on our audio illusion activity while eating Oreos.
  • In gym, we had 25 minutes to run laps to help plan our class goal tomorrow.  We need to aim for running 144 laps altogether as a class.
  • In social studies, we started typing out our interview answers about a fellow student.
What do we need to do next?
We need to bring Toonies for Terry Fox and run one more lap than we did today.  We can do this!!

Top Three Things We Learned Today

  • Today in math, we had some questions to do. Grade 3's and 4's had to solve problems about comparing numbers.  
  • During computer lab we got to send Ms.Cowdy emails! Some of us sent her emojis with our emails. After we got to email our friends and they had to email us back!
  • In gym, we ran laps for Terry for 10 minutes! Afterwards, we played soccer golf. One person got a hole in one!  
What do we need to do next?
In Social Studies, we will need to finish our summaries in our journals. The next step is to type it up on the laptop. The step after that is we will take our partner's picture.

Top Three Things We Learned Today

  • In music, Mr. O'Riley showed his new guitar and he played a few songs for us.  
  • Today in gym, we completed as many laps as we could in 10 minutes and after we played soccer golf. You had to get a hoop and a ball. Your partner held the hoop while the other partner had to get the ball inside the hoop. You had to get the ball in the hoop in the least amount of kicks! 
  • At the end of the day, we started interviews.  We tried to get answers from our classmates that did not have a yes or no answer. We wrote down everything our partner said. Then we wrote the information in a paragraph form. This is called a summary. Instead of writing the summary of the interview on our sheet of paper, we wrote in it in our journals.  
What do we need to do next?
In gym, we need to run more laps to get ready for Terry Fox. 
Once we are done writing our summary in our journals for social studies, we need to write our responses on the computer.

Top Three Things We Learned Today

  • In math, the Grade 3's and the Grade 4's got a new number of the day sheet. The Grade 3's got to use the Grade 4 sheet and the Grade 4's got a brand new sheet. It was harder! 
  • Today in social studies, we finished our passports. We sat at the carpet and tomorrow we will have to interview a classmate. We will interview them on questions about their community. 
  • After recess we had gym. In 10 minutes we ran as many laps as we could. We then played minion tag. 
What do we need to do next?
We need to interview our friend tomorrow.

September 21, 2017- It was the Hour Before Conferences...

Top Three Things We Learned Today

  • In music, we listened to a poem and then created our own poem. Mr. O'Reily told us how eating a hamburger can be like music! 
  • Today in social studies, we took a picture of our faces for our passport and then we had to color our passport picture. We also had another picture where we filled out information such as our birth date, where we were born and our nationality. 
  • Today in gym, we played a game called "pig in the middle". The youngest student was in the middle first and we had to stop a ball with our foot so the pig wouldn't get it! 

What do we need to do next?
We need to glue our picture in for our passport and put it in our social studies duotang.

  • At the end of the day, we had our first social studies class.  We found out we will be studying India, Ukraine, Peru and Tunisia.  We are making our duotangs into passports.
  • In math, we worked on finishing our textbook work, which showed numbers in expanded form, standard form and with base ten blocks.
  • Today in gym, we did a lap for Terry Fox and we played a game called "Not in My Yard" where we had to dribble soccer balls to other hula hoops.

What do we need to do next?
We need to fill the information inside our passports and we need to get our pictures taken.

Top Three Things We Learned Today

  • In music, we watched a video about the global warming happening in the Arctic.  Then we made posters of how music is connected to nature.  We came up with ideas such as singing birds, swaying trees.
  • At the end of the day in art, we finished our newspaper tree art, which will be put up in the hallways.  We also worked on finishing our typing and artwork for our Dr. Coffin story ideas.
  • We practiced increasing our stamina for running for the Terry Fox run in gym.  We also practiced our dribbling skills in soccer by playing a game called Rainforest.

What do we need to do next?
We need to continue practicing our dribbling skills to control the ball in soccer and with running laps so we can run at least 4 laps at the Terry Fox run next Friday.

Top Three Things We Learned Today

  • In art, we worked to complete the backgrounds of our paper birch tree project. We had to use small pieces of paper to create texture.
  • In gym, we started to practice our soccer skills, such as trapping and dribbling.  We played a game called Shark to practice dribbling and keeping the soccer ball in control.
  • This morning in Daily 5, Ms. Jones and Ms. Cowdy talked about how we can look up the definition of words using a dictionary.  To help you find a word, look at the two words on the top of a page.

What do we need to do next?
We need to add our trees to our artwork.  We also need to practice our soccer skills so we can play soccer games.

Top Three Things We Learned Today
In the morning, we had time to work on our Read to Self activity, which has us looking up new words, identifying the main character and the genre of the book.
We went outside and found our adopted plant.  As botanists, we had to describe colours of the leaves, texture and smell of the bark, and sketch it with labels.
We found out some plants don't have leaves this time of year, meaning that they are not making their own food.

What do we need to do next?
We need to ask questions about our plant and do some research about our plant.

September 14, 2017- Paper Trees!

Top Three Things We Learned Today
Today we played Barbarians in gym.  We were divided into four teams and we tried to steal each other's gold while protecting our own.
Today we did paper tree art.  Using a collage method, we had to use tissue paper, construction paper, newspaper and scrapbooking paper to create a colourful background.  We had to rip small pieces and glue them together.
In music, Mr. O'Reilly showed us two of his electric guitars. We had to put our names on our journals and decorate them.

What do we need to do next?
Next week in art, we need to make our trembling aspen trees and outline them using our Sharpie pens.

Top Three Things We Learned Today
We learned that plants do not need food, they make their own with sunlight, carbon dioxide, soil and water.
Today we had our first library class.  It is important to choose a just right book for me!
In gym, we played King's Gold.  It is a team game, so we have to work together to keep and get more gold.

What do we need to do next?
We need to read a picture book to work on an assignment that we have to finish this week.  We need to know who the author is, we need to make questions and we need to choose interesting words and look up their definition.

September 12, 2017- Our First Music Class Was Today!

Homework: Adopt-a-plant journal-include a picture, four observations, and give the plant a name.

Top Three Things We Learned Today
Our first fire drill happened today during our first music class.  In music, we played a game where you said your name with a word that also starts with the same letter.
We got our email accounts and we learned what we can and cannot do with them.
In gym, we learned a new tag game called blob tag.  When the person who is it tags another person, they became a "blob".  When the the blob had four people it split into two.

What do we need to do next?
With our new accounts, we can email our friends and teachers, and we can use Google Docs for work.

Top Three Things We Learned Today
We learned techniques to add texture before we sketched our adopted plant.  To help us sketch, we used the picture we took last Friday.
Today we practiced printing and writing our d's and a's.
We had our first computer class this morning.  We had some technical difficulties as some people could not log in.  We were trying to get to our Google Doc account to type out our good copy of our Dr. Coffin story.

What do we need to do next?
We need to change and remember our passwords so that we can use the computers this year!

We highlighted our work for capitals and periods to make sure our sentences were perfect.
Today we "adopted" a plant we found around the school.  We will be taking care of it this year.
We made a Fresh Air Friday title page and had to put ten pictures on it that show what we do on these days.

What do we need to do next?

We need to type out our rough copy of our writing and we need to sketch our adopted plant into our Fresh Air Friday journals.

September 7, 2017- The Most Magnificent Day because the parents have homework

What did we do today?

  • We helped our little kindergarten buddies by sitting with them during our first school assembly. While we waited for our buddies, we played a game called Whoosh, Bang, Pow!
  • In the afternoon, we read a book called the The Most Magnificent Thing.  It is about a girl and her canine assistant who try to build the most magnificent invention.  She got mad and her assistant suggested a walk. During the walk, she got a cookie and she started to feel better.  She saw all her inventions in a new way.
  • We met our new music teacher.  His name is Mr. O'Reilly.
  • Today in gym, we got to play basketball, go to the playground and play skipping games.
  • We had a spelling test before lunch and we had to spell 30 words.
  • We also were given the chance to tell Mrs. Polski what ideas we would like painted on the newly paved sun circle/ basketball area.
  • In math, we did our fidget spinner math, and we were given four minutes to solve multiplication and division questions.

What did we do today?


  • We used our fidget spinners to time ourselves while we answered some math operation questions.  We solved addition and subtraction questions.
  • After lunch, Ms. Cowdy read the book Do Unto Otters to both classes.
  • We had our first gym class today after recess.  We had a choice of playing in the park, basketball, or playing in the field.
  • At the end of the day, we got our writing books ready.  Our first task is to write how we can get a Dr. E. W. Coffin student ready to learn.
  • We had more time to finish our All About Me honeycombs.
  • We talked about classroom jobs and made some for the year.  We get to do each job for two weeks.
  • Today we did a figure me out, where we had to make questions to answer how old we were and our birthday.
  • Before lunch we went over the lunch expectations.
  • in the afternoon we did people bingo, where we tried to find another person who had done a certain question.

September 5, 2017- Epic first day back!

What did we do today?

  • In the morning,we read a book about a teacher who had the First Day Jitters.
  • Today practiced some class routines like lining up, how to ask to go to the washroom and to get a drink.
  • We also read Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun and Decibella.  We learned about the five levels of voices (whisper, six inch voice, table talk, speaker voice and OUTSIDE).
  • This morning, we filled an all about me, a science about me and a math about me honeycomb.
  • We had gym in the afternoon instead of the morning.  With room 5 we played chuck the chicken and dragon's tail.  We will need some more practice with how to work together.
