January 30, 2020- Building beams

Important Info:

Report cards went out today- please check your child's backpack

What did we learn?
  • Yesterday in math, the grade 4's practiced their multiplication through a game called t-ball multiplication.  The grade 3's practiced their subtraction through a game called break 100.
  • In science, we made square and triangular beams to hold up weights.
  • This week in language arts, we finished an opinion writing piece on a topic of our choice.  If we finished we created a comic for it.
  • Yesterday in social studies some people got to share their Calgary presentations.  Some of the presentations were about the fire, the flood, the war and the Olympics.

January 28, 2020- Twin and triplet day!

No school this Friday- PD day

February 4th- field trip to Bella Concert Hall- we will need 2-3 volunteers

What did we learn?
  • For twin day, in gym we played blob tag.  We would be paired up with own twin to tag our classmates, ultimately becoming a super blob! 
  • Today in music, we did some music note writing and we learned some new symbols for dynamics.
  • Yesterday in art we had to write about the artist we picked to put on in information card.  When we were finished we got to free draw.
  • In science we started a new unit.  It's called Testing and Building Materials.  We watched two videos about bridges.  We found out there are six types of bridges.

January 23, 2020- The Whispering Grasses Walkway Bridge

What did we learn today?
  • Today we went to a bridge called the Whispering Grasses Walkway.  We did some sketches and we observed the building materials.  The bridge was built in 2005 and Dr. Coffin students came up with the name.  Check out the link: http://www.natureground.org/wgrass.html

January 21, 2020- Art Tuesday

Science Fair this Thursday- we will be checking out the grade 5/6 projects

What did we learn today?
  • Today in art we looked up artists on the Public Art Calgary website.  We looked at their artwork and we filled out a sheet about what the artist uses and facts about them.  Then we drew a picture and recreate it.
  • In music, we reviewed our notes and did a quiz with the notes and words to match them up.  There were three different stages: beginner, intermediate and advanced.
  • The grade 4's did a quiz on their multiplication facts and then we reviewed the answers before playing Criss Cross.  The grade 3's did subtraction practice before playing a math game called What is the Difference?

January 17, 2020- Bridging the Gap



Important Info:

Make sure your child comes to school dressed for the weather and the conditions.  Next week will be much nicer.
Treat Day on January 21 (next Tuesday).  Our class is responsible for bringing the treats!  Don't forget!

What did we learn today?
  • Yesterday in language arts we continued to work on our persuasive writing using the triple Oreo cookie organizer.  We stated our opinion of what makes Dr. Coffin a good school and we supported it with reasons and examples.
  • We had social studies and we did our slides.
  • Today in science we had to build a bridge.  We were given only a meter of tape, 20 popsicle sticks and as much yarn as we wanted.  The Bridge had to be able to hold a dictionary.  When we succeeded with that challenge, we had to change it to a drawbridge.
  • Sa'akokoto visited us yesterday and he told us some stories, told us how they cooked using things in nature and tracked us with a riddle.

January 14, 2020- Someone has a new do...

What did we learn today?
  • Today in music we got to see Mr. O'Reilly's new haircut! First we did sharing then we started reviewing the notes that Mrs. Remmer taught us last week.  Afterwards he told us the names before quizzing us.
  • In math the grade 4's learned a new game called Make a Difference where you would use cards and put them in the spots that were empty.  The grade 3's did subtraction using base ten blocks.
  • We have started persuasive writing in language arts.  First we stated our opinion.  Secondly we thought up of reasons and examples.  Lastly, you restate your opinion again.
  • We had four centers in gym today.  Two were keep away games and two were shooting centers where we practiced using the hoops.

January 10, 2020- Snowshoes and hot chocolate

Sa'akokoto is visiting us next week

What did we learn today?
  • Today we went outside for Fresh Air Friday.  We went snowshoeing for half an hour using the school's snowshoes.  They were tricky for some of us to get on, so Ms. Jones has promised us we will go out again on another day.
  • In social studies, we started making slides for the Calgary Challenge.  We picked a major event in Calgary's history that interested us and we are researching answers to given questions about that time.
  • This week in gym, we started our basketball unit.  We have doing tricks like the hot potato and around the world dribbling.  We also started to learn and practice the chest pass, bounce pass and overhead pass.
  • This week Ms. Jones started reading the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.  We did a sorting quiz and were sorted into different table groups that are named after the houses in the book.

January 7, 2020- Welcome back to a new decade!

Important Info:

Fresh Air Friday this Friday- it will be cold so please be dressed very warmly to go outside
Fun lunch on January 16th, please have your order in by January 10th.

What did we learn today?
  • In gym we did basketball we practiced the V dribble, the around the world and pivoting.  At the end we played shark.
  • In social studies, we watched all the Boomtown Busters videos.  We created a timeline of all the big events like the Great Calgary Fire and the Olympics.
  • Instead of doing the daily warm up in the new year, we are doing printing practice and cursive writing.  So far we have done a and d.  They look a lot different than printing.
  • This week we have been talking and writing about an event that happened during our Winter Break.  Ms. Jones wants us to focus on transition words instead of using "then."
