What did we do today?
  • Before and after gym, the grade 4s worked on a number of lattice questions, some that were three digit by one digit.  The grade 3s worked on multiplication booklets and answered questions using the repeated addition method.
  • In gym, we learned and practiced ball handling skills, including the hot potato, figure 8s, switcheroo, wrap around, and fast hands.
  • In science, we continued working on our animal hearing profiles.  Many of us got to the interesting fact section, where we have to write two facts on their hearing.
  • In health, we voted for the five Unthinkables we need to learn about about and improve on.  They are DOF, Worry Wall, Glassman, Brain Eater and Space Invader.
  • Today in Daily 5, Ms. Jones introduced word work to us.  You get this sheet with scrambled letters, which you have to make words with.  There is a secret word where all the letters are used.  We had to spell 3 letter, 4 letter and 5+letter words.  We got to work on a Daily 5 choice after music.
  • In music, we practiced our song for tomorrow's assembly with room 5.
Questions:
1. How many more food items will we bring in for tomorrow?
2. What songs will the other classes sing at the assembly tomorrow?
3. What will be the most interesting fact researched for our animal profiles?

What did we do today?
  • This morning in math, the grade 4s worked on a lattice method assignment.  The grade 3s learned a new method called repeated addition.  We used arrays, equal groups and repeated addition to solve three questions.
  • Today in gym, some people had to video their skipping routine while the other groups got to play basketball.  The people doing basketball had to dribble the ball outside in the basketball court.  We also played horse, which is a shooting basket game.
  • After recess, we went into the computer lab to change our passwords and to get into our Google accounts.  We had to send an email to Ms. Jones.
  • During our read aloud, Marty introduced his mom to Remi and he stayed for supper.  He also showed a magazine about aliens to Remi to prove he is from outer space.
  • After lunch, in Daily 5, we got to work on either Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading or finish our spooky stories which are due Thursday.
  • After Daily 5, we had library.  We were assigned two jobs.  One was to find a book at our just right reading level.  The other was to find a book on an animal so that we could do research during science.
  • In science, we were to look up facts about an animal that we are interested in with their hearing.
Questions:
1. What will be the most common animal studied in science?  The least common?
2. Will we win the Super Soup Can trophy?
3. Will Remi eat the chicken foot and the octopus tentacle?
4. Will Marty's mother figure out that Remi is observing her for alien behaviour?

What did we do today?
  • This morning in math, we had five minutes to solve 60 mad minutes.  Some of us did adding and subtracting and others did multiplying.  Ms. Jones is going to compare these to the ones we did in September.
  • In gym, most of the groups got to film their skipping routines.  We will be starting basketball next.
  • Today in science, Ms. Jones talked to us about frequency, which is measured in Hertz.  We had to do some reading about frequency and pitch, and read a graph about the frequencies different animals can hear.  The dolphin can hear the lowest and the highest frequency.
  • After science, Ms. Wilkens introduced us to more Unthinkables.  In our table groups, we decided on which 5 Unthinkables we should work more on.
  • After lunch, we had a class meeting about the upcoming Evergreen Theater visit next week.  We decided on a question to focus on and shared interesting facts.
  • In Daily Five, Ms. Jones took two groups of students to do guided reading while the rest of us chose to work on Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading and working on our spooky stories.
  • At the end of the day, we finished working on our fossil observations in our paleontologist field guides.
Questions:
1. How many times will the singing bowl be used?  It is a lot in the afternoon!
2. What will our play be like with the Evergreen Theater?
3. What will some of the costumes be?
4. When will we start building our own instruments for science?

What did we do today?

  • For Fresh Air Friday, we first watched two videos.  The first one was to get us excited about paleontology.  During the second one, we had to carefully watch for the steps that a paleontologist does when they find a fossil or dig site.  Paleontologists jacket their fossils with a protective coat to remove the fossil from the ground.  They also protect the site with tin foil around the fossils and plastic so that they can return the next day.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7zo2zY1Zqg&feature=related
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjhDV_GzTM8
  • As paleontologists, we had to prospect, map, observe and document a site in the Whispering Woods that we felt might have fossils.  We found a site first, then mapped the area by creating a meter grid with bamboo sticks and string.  After we finished, Ms. Jones or Ms. Cowdy would take a picture of our grid and we received the GPS coordinates to our site.  We then documented our observations and drew a picture of our grid in our paleontology field guides.  Some of us believe we have a legitimate fossil find in our dig sites.
  • We had a music practice today with Room 5 for our assembly next Thursday.

Questions:
1. What is our next unit in gym? Basketball
2. If we did find fossils, how many fossils will we have found?
3. Are we going to look in other areas like the nature grounds for fossils?
4. What is the next activity we are going to do in science?
5. What are the other classes doing for the Remembrance Day assembly?
6. Where will we go to find fossils, if we go to other places?

What did we do today?
  • This morning in math, the grade 3s learned a multiplication strategy called equal grouping.  The grade 4s played a game called the amoeba multiplication game.  You can find it at http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/maths/ma12pape/game/ma12pape-game-written-multiplication/multiplication.swf.  They also learned the method to multiply called the lattice method.
  • In gym, one group showed their routine. Today was our last day practice, as we will be performing them on Monday.
  • For Read Aloud, Ms. Jones read us more from the story The Mystery of the Frozen Brains.  In the story Marty is sneaking Remi into his parent's store.
  • After our read aloud we had music, where we practiced our Remembrance Day song without the words.  Tomorrow we will be practicing with Room 5.  After that, we continued to practice our rhythm cups karate.
  • In language arts, we worked on our spooky stories.  If we finished, we had to COPS our work and share it with a friend.  After editing, we were able to type it out on the computer.
  • For Daily 5, we got to choose one of three reading options and we had to work on completing an activity after.
  • In social studies, we continued working on our fossil observations and inferences, which will be handy for tomorrow.
Questions:
1. Will we actually find some fossils in the Whispering Woods?
2. How much food will we be able to donate to the Veteran's Food Bank?

What did we do today?
  • This morning in math, the grade 3s finished designing chocolate bars and played the array game with a buddy.  The grade 4s had to complete building arrays and partial products to multiply two digit by one digit numbers.
  • In gym, we kept on practicing and creating our routines with hoops and skipping ropes.  Today was our last day to choose the skills we are going to show.
  • In science, Ms. Jones and Ms. Cowdy taught us about pitch.  They gave us a graph for us to fill after we had vibrated a ruler at different lengths over the edge of our desks.  We learned that the shorter the ruler, the higher the pitch and the frequency.  The longer the ruler, the lower the pitch and frequency.
  • In health, we finished our rock brain moment reflection.  We then shared our moments with a group and received a sticker for completing it.
  • In language arts, we worked on our spooky stories.  If we finished, we had to COPS our work and share it with a friend.  After editing, we were able to type it out on the computer.
  • In music today we played a game where we had to keep the beat with rhythm sticks.
  • In Daily 5, we had the option of choosing Raz Kids, Read to Self or Read to Someone.
