September 24, 2018- SOGO Go!

Agenda:
  • read 20 min
  • SOGO Adventure Running Residency all this week - please come dressed for the weather as we will be running outside. You need to have outdoor running shoes. We need volunteers to help run the stations everyday. Room 4’s schedule in the school yard:
    Tues 1:15-2:15
    Wed 2:15-3:15
    Thursday is Nose Hill 1:00-3:15. 
    Friday is also Nose Hill the whole morning until 12:00pm.
    Let me know by email (sacjones@cbe.ab.ca) if and when you are available. We really need people for the Thursday and Friday to go to Nose Hill. 
  • Music independent study- some of us are taking this home to research.  If so, please bring back Wednesday so we can work on it.
What are the top things we did today?
  • In gym, we had a company called SOGO come and run two stations to increase speed and endurance.  We will be running with them all week!
  • In math, we built a structure out of base ten blocks.  Then we had to figure out how much the structure was worth by counting its ones, tens, hundreds and thousands.
  • Mr. O'Reilly gave us a project.  We got to choose one instrument which we will research.  On the paper he gave us, it asks for the family it belongs in, as well as interesting facts and what it looks like.

September 20, 2018- Nature's Waste

Agenda:

What are the top five things we did today?
  • In math, we finished our addition strategies booklet.  After that we had to play a double or nothing game before moving on to a subtraction strategy booklet.
  • In science, we went for a walk around the Whispering Woods to observe nature and its waste.  After Daily Five we reviewed what we saw and discussed how nature's waste turns back into soil.
  • We played spiderman tag in gym using scooters.  If the spiderman tagged you you became stuck in the web.
  • We did our second school-wide big pickup today where we collected the recycling, one use snack wrappers, paper towels for compost, refundables and food compost.
  • In computer lab, we started to put our learning goals in IRIS.

September 19, 2018- Our second orchestra

What are the top five things we did today?
  • In gym, we made ourselves into human knots.  We had to work together to untie ourselves back into a circle without letting go of each others hands.
  • During computer lab, we had to write down goals in our journals which we will be posting onto our IRIS accounts.
  • Mr. O'Reilly finished reading the book My First Orchestra in music.  Then we listened to all the sounds the instruments made separately and together.
  • After we had music, we had a catch up time where we finished our journals about interviewing a classmate, our social charts on climate and word work.
  • We also worked on our addition and subtraction mental math strategies.  Some strategies are using number lines, the split strategy and looking for tens.

September 18, 2018- B is for Book Fair and Buddies

What are the top three things we did today?
  • We had our first visit with our little buddies today.  We read them a story.
  • In gym, we played hula hoop four square.  We had to keep the bean bags out of our hoop while putting them in others.
  • This afternoon, we had our first word work class.  We had to make words using the -ail, -ale, -ain and -ane endings as well as solve the mystery word which was airplanes.
  • We also got to go to the library and make our wish lists for the book fair.
  • We learned about what climate is in social studies.  It is the average weather trends over a long period of time.

September 17, 2018- Painting like mini-Van Goghs

What are the top three things we did today?
  • In Daily 5. we interviewed a classmate who we did not know well.  We asked questions like what their favourite ice cream flavour was, who they would want to meet and what are they talented at.
  • This afternoon we had art.  This was the last day to work on our rockfish.  If we were done, we started a wheat field landscape based on a painting by Vincent Van Gogh.
  • In music, Mr. O'Reilly showed us a video about five people playing the same guitar.  The band was called Walk Off the Earth.

September 14, 2018- Green Team!

What are the top three things we did today?
  • both room 4 and room 5 are going to be part of the school Green Team this year.  As part of our Waste and Our World study this year, we will be responsible for being the environmental stewards for our school.  After doing a survey of every room in the school, we collected the recycling, compost and one use snack wrappers from our assigned area.  This will be a part of our Fresh Air Fridays for the year.
  • after our snack break, we went outside and did a lap for the Terry Fox run.  We then went back into the class and created a map and directions of the route using our cardinal directions.

September 13, 2018- The Invisible Boy

Agenda:
  • Journal writing due tomorrow
  • Welcome back potluck BBQ tonight- starts at 5:00pm.  Due to the impending bad weather, this event will take place indoors.
  • Fresh Air Friday #2 tomorrow- be dressed for the weather and to be ready to run.
What are the top three things we did today?
  • In computer lab, we had to send an email to Ms. Jones and we signed in to our Raz-Kids accounts, which we will use during Daily 5 this year.
  • Ms. Jones read us a story called The Invisible Boy.  After we had to answer some questions about the story while working with a buddy we don't normally work at.
  • In gym, we played a game called Not In My Backyard.  We had to work as a team to get rid of the balls other teams were putting in our team hoop.  Then the game changed so that we wanted to collect balls for our team hoop.
